The Provincial Council system was established in Sri Lanka in the year 1988 under the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. Consequently the Department of Ayurveda, Central Province was established on 01st of May 1988, as a result of devolution of power to the Provincial Councils, under the 32 (1) clause of the Provincial Council Act no.42 of 1987. Provincial Department of Ayurveda is the responsible government institution for the indigenous medicine in Central Province.
Curative care, Preventive care and production of drugs for the needs of the Central Province are the main mandatory works of the department.
In addition to that, conservation of traditional knowledge & medical practices, research and development of Traditional medicine, sustainable use of medicinal plants & herbal gardens and encouraging small & medium scale entrepreneurship based on indigenous medicine are the main trust areas of the Department. Currently 9 Ayurveda hospitals, 31 Ayurveda medical service provision institutes and 36 prevention service provision institutes are functioning in the three districts of Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya. There are a total of 433 staff including the sections medical, para-medical, management and service assistant, providing services to the public within the Province.

As the Commissioner of the Central Provincial Council Department of Ayurveda, it is my privilege to share our ongoing efforts in establishing and empowering a trusted network of Ayurveda treatment throughout the province. Our primary goal is to provide accessible and reliable healthcare solutions rooted in the ancient wisdom of indigenous medicine. This network is designed to not only offer effective treatments but also ensure that people feel confident and contented with the quality of care they receive, fostering a healthier community through natural healing practices.
Additionally, we are actively expanding our Ayurveda community medicine service, focusing on enhancing the personal well-being of individuals. By promoting the excellence of indigenous medicine, we aim to shape positive personal attitudes towards health and wellness. In doing so, we remain committed to preserving the native and traditional knowledge of Ayurveda, while also evolving the expectations of future practitioners. Our vision is to safeguard the rich heritage of Ayurveda, ensuring it thrives for generations to come while meeting modern healthcare needs.
